Why 4-H?

4-H is a community for all kids! 4-H believes in the power of young people. 4-H recognizes that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world. 4-H is America’s largest youth development organization—empowering nearly six million young people across the U.S. with the skills to lead for a lifetime.

4-H provides an opportunity for young people to belong – to be a part of a group (club), to learn new things and do fun things together. 4-H enables youth to:

• Learn new skills, gain knowledge and develop positive attitudes.
• Develop and use their creative talents.
• Learn to make informed decisions and solve problems.
• Develop a feeling of self-worth, while respecting the rights and privileges of others.

4-H is designed to meet the interests of the youth. It helps youth discover and develop life skills, and set personal goals. Involvement in project areas gives members the help needed to improve specific skills and explore new ones. 4-H is family oriented in that children and parents are encouraged to work together on projects and activities.

What do 4-Her’s do?

4-H club members have a wide variety of educational activities offered by the community, county, and state. Some of these activities are tours, workshops, achievement programs, camps, statewide conferences, exchanges, exhibits and fairs. There are also many national events and opportunities too!

Join 4-H:

Chaffee County has 7 community 4-H Clubs that meet in Salida, Buena Vista, and Leadville.  Contact us to see which clubs meet closest to you and match your interests the best.  Plan to visit the club during a regular meeting as a guest to see if that club is a good match.

4-H School & Community Programs:

Interested in bringing 4-H to your classroom, community center, or rec center? We have a variety of program offerings to pick from. We follow National Standards and help bring hands-on activities to you.

Heads, hands, heart, health! Check out all the projects available through 4-H. Explore, learn new skills, try something new, meet friends with similar interests, and build mastery!

Become a Volunteer:

Adult volunteers play an vital role in the 4-H program. Volunteers coordinate local community clubs and help to plan and conduct local, regional, state and national 4-H events. Call the Extension office at 719-539-6447 to learn about how to apply and receive training to be a 4-H volunteer.
